Benjamin was born September 9, 1847 in Fredonia, Chatauqua County, New York near Markham's Corners, later the town of Markham, New York which was founded by the David Markham descendants.

He traveled west to Will County, Illinois where he married 16 year old Harriet Belle Shipp on March 2, 1871 in Lockport, Will County, Illinois at the age of 24.

Their first child, Edward Herbert was born 3 1/2 years later, November 4, 1874 in Peotone, Will County, Illinois. Edward died at the age of 79, December 30, 1953.

Their second son, William Henry, was born May 18, 1876 in Springfield, Sagaman County, Illinois and died at the age of 86 on April 4, 1963.

It can be assumed that they moved west to Kansas between 1876 or 1878.

Their third son, George Francis, was born June 19, 1878 in Oberlin, Decatur County, Kansas and died at the age of 69 on October 22, 1947.

Their fourth son, Charles Robert, was born on December 8, 1880 in Dresden, Decatur County, Kansas and died in Mead, CO at the age 55 on March 31, 1936.

Their fifth child and first daughter, Belle, was born in 1882 in Oberlin, Decatur County. Kansas and died at the age of 17 in 1899.

Their sixth child and second daughter, Alice May, was born September 21, 1884 in Dresden, Decatur County, Kansas.

Their seventh child and third daughter, Lillian Agnes, was born August 1, 1887 in Dresden, Decatur County, Kansas and died at the age of 69 on November 10, 1956.

Sometime between the fall of 1887 and the spring of 1893 they moved further west to Colorado.

Their eighth child and fourth daughter, Elizabeth (Bessie), was born May 10, 1893 in Highland Lake, Weld County, Colorado and died at the age of 93 in June 1986.

Their ninth child and fifth son, La Verne, was born in 1896 in Highland Lake, Weld County, Colorado and died there as a child in 1899.

Benjamin died January 29, 1896 at the age of 49 and was buried at Highland Lake. Dates are from the grave stone in Highland Lake Cemetery, Weld County, Colorado.
