The Markhams are related to the Shermans by the marriage of Ruth McCormick to Harley B. Markham in 1929. Ruth McCormick was the daughter of George C. McCormick and Carrie Sherman.

He married ABIGAIL MAYNARD August 21, 1769 in Marlborough, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, daughter of REUBEN MAYNARD and DOROTHY WILLIAMS. She was born September 16, 1750 in Westborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts and died Aft. 1800 in Alburgh, Grand Isle County, VT.

Notes for ABNER SHERMAN:
Documented members of Abner Sherman family are Abner, Jr., Abigail (Nabby), Oliver Cromwell, and Jeduthan (Marlboro birth records). Data supporting Triphena's parentage:
(1) 1790 census data shows 4 females in household, one of whom could be Triphena.
(2) 1820 census data (VT) enumerates David Smith family next to Abner Sherman family, suggesting they lived close to each other.
(3) After Triphena died in abt 1816, David Smith married Deborah Tarbox. Their first child, born 1818, was named Maynard Smith, perhaps in memory of Triphena, whose mother's maiden name was Maynard.
An Abner Sherman is listed as Head of Household in 1790 VT census, Moretown, Chittenden County:

DAR (application of Marjorie Chase) indicates that Abner Sherman died at Chittenden Co., VT 20 Apr 1784. This date was crossed out and replaced with "aft 1790" in different handwriting, apparently on basis of 1790 census data.

DAR 379253 gives birthplace as Chautauqua, NY, I believe in error. The 1850 Federal Census for District 56, Woodford County, lists his birthplace as Massachusetts--I assume Marlborough as that was the birthplace for his siblings (except Triphena).

1820 census, Alburgh, VT lists Abner Sherman and wife, both 45+; 1 male 10-16, 1 M under 10, 1 F under 10. Must be Abner 2, b. 27 Dec 1769. Listed next is David Smith and wife, both 26-45; 4 males and, 2 females 10-16, 1 male and 2 females under 10. Triphena presumably died abt 1816, this would be second wife (Deborah Tarbox/Tarbell). David Smith married Deborah Tarbox soon after Triphena died. David and Deborah's first child, born 1818, named Maynard Smith. First child born after remarriage often named after first spouse. Maynard named in remembrance of Triphena through her mother's maiden name?
