Levi's pension papers, War 1812 His age on May 1, 1855 was 86, making him born in 1787 Married May 15, 1821 by Thomas McLeod, JP at Wilmington/Essex/NY to Eurince Sharp. Affidavits verifying Levi's identity by Nathan B. Markham, notarized by John D. Markham (Nathan's son) but does not state his relationship to Levi. Nathan B. was also an eyewitness to the marriage of Levi and Eunice by Thomas McLeod who was deceased at the time of the affidavit which was April 27, 1878, and says there is no public or church record of said marriage to his knowledge. John D. and Nathan B. Markham were residents of Manitowoc, WI as of April 27, 1878. On May 1, 1855, when Nathan was a witness of Levi's affidavit of identity, he was living in Dickinson Center, NY.

Obituary of Nathan B. Markham corroborates his locations.
1850 Census says Levi was born in Vermont.
1860 census says he was born in Connecticut.

LDS sources. Pedigree file #1260, chrt 2B shows Nathan B. and Levi both as sons of Barzillai, who moved to Willmington, NY in 1800. Levi would have been 14, Nathan would have been 4.

Markham Memorial Film #0000786, an expansion of "History of the Markham Family" Pub 1858 by the son of the author of the original Markham Memorials, pub 1913, is a book of the descendants of the Markhams of Nottinghamshire, England. It contains an article about Barzillai Markham and his son, Nathan B. Markham. The dates and p;aces as well as his wife's and children's names match the Nathan B, Markham who witnessed Levi and Eurnice's marriage. At the end of the article it says that Nathan's brother, Levi Markham, had five sons, all farmers "Levi and Eunice had Levi B. (1826), Nathan (1829), Clark (1830), Delilah (1833), Henry Clay (1835) and Gilbert (1838)--five sons, three of whom I know were farmers, the other two, I don't know yet. At the time "Markham Memorials" was written, the Markham family bible was in possession of Thomas H. McLeod of Middleburg, VT (1913). There is no guarantee that Levi's birth would be recorded in it, as the dates covered are not stated in the book. Since it was the source of the author's information for that part of the family, it would verify what he published, possibly in more detail, possibly not.

May 20 1997--I have also acquitted information from the Congregational Church of Enfield, CT pertaining to the fact that Barzillai Markham helped organize the "Separatist" Church, the original petition to form the new church being signed in 1770. The church lasted only thorough the term of one minister which was several years. During this time, if home births were recorded, the records for them no longer exist. It was during this time that Levi would have been born.

Notations on Family Connections

The preceding is from well established sources and traces the lineage of the Daniel Markham II family before and after his immigration to America. The following is the genealogy of the family of Benjamin Francis Markham who was the founder of the Markham family in Colorado.

Although no positive link has yet been found between Benjamin Francis and the preceding Markham genealogy, the timing and place of his origin in Western New York make it highly likely that he was related to that Markham family which founded many of the communities in the area. At the time of his birth there were several related Markham families in Chatauqua and Cattarugus counties, including some in the town of Fredonia and the nearby township of Villenova.

The town records for Fredonia were lost in a courthouse fire in 1885, thus, no record of his birth is available.
